Reducing Geosmins, Trihalomethanes and Chloramines While Improving Taste and Odor from Source Drinking Water Reservoir Treatment

Drinking water sources are under attack.  Naturally occurring concerns such as manganese, iron, hydrogen sulfide, increasing organics, increasing surface water temperatures, and wild weather swings are making it difficult for operators. In addition, increased pesticide, herbicide, chemical usage, and other contamination issues such as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), are rendering some drinking water sources unusable or expensive to continue for water treatment.

All these issues and more are responsible for contributing to a decline in water quality, increased occurrence, and frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs), increase aquatic weed growth, and increased complaints from water consumers

Water Treatment Concerns

Geosmin are naturally occurring compounds found in surface waters (reservoirs, rivers, lakes, etc.) as organic molecules produced by blue-green algae. Warming water temperatures and high nutrients provide conditions favorable for algal growth, which in turn cause bad taste and odor in treated drinking water.

Trihalomethanes (THMs) are the result of a reaction between the chlorine used for disinfecting tap water and natural organic matter in the water. At elevated levels, THMs have been associated with negative health effects such as cancer and adverse reproductive outcomes.

Chloramines (also known as secondary disinfection) are disinfectants used to treat drinking water and are most commonly formed when ammonia is added to chlorine to treat drinking water. However, the use of chlorine may produce chlorinated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) which may increase the amount of carcinogens in the processed drinking water.

Taste and odor issues are caused by several naturally occurring nuisance constituents such as iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. Additionally, chlorine treatment can also increase taste and odor issues at the tap.

Reducing Geosmin, Trihalomethanes and Chloramines

Increasing dissolved oxygen levels in the water and reducing blue green algae and other organics is the first step in reducing these problematic treatment issues. Decreased nutrient levels and constant circulation of the water column reduce some of the advantages that blue green algae possess. In addition, our bioaugmentation process stimulates diatom growth to further reduce nutrient levels.

Increased oxygen levels throughout the water column provide the perfect environment and water quality for beneficial microbial activity. Microbes are important for reducing the organic muck and carbon typically covering the bottom of a water body. Historical sonar scans and sediment testing on previous projects show that Clean-Flo’s program is extremely successful in reducing organic sediment, reducing carbon, and increasing the available volume and depth in our treated water bodies.

Reducing Taste and Odor Issues

Reducing blue green algal growth is important for improving taste and odor, but it is not the only concern. Manganese, iron, and hydrogen sulfide are common concerns in surface waters used for a drinking water source.

Clean-Flo’s system and program consistently shows drastic reductions in iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide levels. The high levels of oxygen throughout the water column created by our system, binds the iron and manganese in the sediments. Hydrogen sulfide is quickly eliminated by eliminating the conditions where anaerobic bacteria, those bacteria that live without oxygen, can produce hydrogen sulfide.
