Planktonic

Planktonic Description:

The Planktonic algae does not form a mass. They are free-floating microscopic plants which can be found floating on the top few feet of water in ponds or lakes. Planktonic algae require light so they may produce food by photosynthesis. The algae colors pond water in various shades of greens, blue greens and brown. When the millions of algae cover the water, it is referred to as a bloom.

Planktonic algae is important to the pond food chain. It also helps to shade areas of water which will then lessen the establishment of rooted aquatic plants. However, as seen with most aquatic plants, too much Planktonic algae can be the cause of oxygen depletion and lead to fish kills.
